Ginseng Bonsai
Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ is a unique and popular bonsai plant known for its striking appearance. It is sometimes referred to as the Bonsai Ficus or Malayan Banyan, originating from the tropical regions of Asia, particularly Taiwan and Malaysia. The name ‘ginseng’ refers to the plant’s large and ornamental roots that resemble the ginseng herb.
Appearance
This bonsai typically grows to about 1-2 feet in height. It features a thick, pot-bellied trunk with prominent roots above the soil surface, giving it a distinctive, aged look. The small, glossy, dark green leaves emerge from the top of the trunk, creating a lush canopy.
Care
Light
Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Mist the leaves occasionally to increase humidity.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range between 60°F and 75°F (15°C – 24°C).
Soil
Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced, liquid bonsai fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season.
