Sansevieria
Sansevieria, commonly known as Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a highly resilient and popular houseplant. It originates from West Africa, specifically from Nigeria to the Congo, and is well-adapted to a variety of indoor environments. This plant is known for its air-purifying qualities and is very forgiving, making it ideal for beginners or those with a less-than-green thumb. It’s also highly drought-tolerant.
Appearance
Sansevieria typically grows to about 2-4 feet in height. It has stiff, upright leaves that are dark green with light gray-green cross-banding and often a yellow border. The leaves are sword-like in shape, growing vertically from a basal rosette.
Care
Light
Tolerates low light but thrives in bright, indirect sunlight.
Watering
Water sparingly; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (15°C – 27°C).
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix.
Fertilizing
Fertilize with a mild cactus or houseplant fertilizer during the growing season.
